What might cause a Cracked Tooth?
There are several things that could cause or contribute to a cracked tooth. Prevention of a cracked tooth isn’t always a viable option, as cracks and breaks can happen at virtually any time. Some contributing factors to a cracked tooth include:
- Eating hard, dense foods
- Having recently had a root canal
- A tooth has a very large filling in it
- Biting onto pens, pencils and other objects
- Chewing ice
- Un-monitored orthodontic treatment
Why do you need treatment for a Cracked Tooth?
If you fail to reach out for treatment of a cracked tooth, the crack can and will eventually get worse. This may cause the inner pulp to become exposed, causing issues with pain and severe sensitivity. If you’ve already had a root canal, a crack or break can simply be problematic to your oral health. The sharp, jagged edges of the crack can irritate soft issue and be a breeding ground for plaque and bacterial infection.
What can you expect when coming into the office with a Cracked Tooth?
We will have you come into the office and examine the tooth. In some cases, a root canal may be needed if the inner pulp was exposed when the tooth cracked. Oftentimes, a tooth that needs a root canal will be severely painful and sensitive. We will then fit you with a new dental crown. Impressions allow us to make the crown for you and fit you with it at your next appointment. The crown protects the remaining tooth and prevents problems with sensitivity and pain.
